Apple don't let me down!
So its no secret that I reallllly want an iPhone, now there's a slight murmur in the house that if I make certain goals, that I'll get one. However, I might save my "iPhone" purchase till the 3G iPhone comes out. Smart idea right? Well there's a few things that have me nervous about this new model that everyone is buzzing about. First off the design, sure I'd love it to be all black, that'd be cool, but now Apple Insider says we might see the aluminum backs become plastic, which I don't think i'd like (wouldn't that be easier to scratch?). Also, I think the MacBook Air like - "tapered design" that they mentioned might also be kind of disgusting. I guess I should have more faith in Apple, new designs are always better than the previous.

HTC Touch. In the Ghetto.
Finding the perfect phone is an exercises in futility. I was very hesitant on picking up the HTC touch because at the end of the day, it is still a windows mobile 6 phone device. It would be difficult to talk about a smartphone without speaking of the iPhone, which as a device is very cool hardware wise and the software interface is exactly what a phone needs. I want one.
Free Wi-Fi Access to iPhone Users???
AT&T Providing Free Wi-Fi Access to iPhone Users
A couple of readers (of MacRumors) have reported that AT&T hotspots are now offering free Wi-Fi access to iPhone users. AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots at Barnes and Noble as well as Starbucks are now offering iPhone users a custom portal to access free Wi-Fi. A special iPhone formatted page asks for your mobile phone number. Once entered, you can access the Wi-Fi access for free. MacRumors has been able to confirm this finding at a local Barnes and Noble. Blurry photo provided:
AT&T recently partnered with Starbucks to provide Wi-Fi access to Starbucks' 7000 stores nationwide. This partnership allowed existing AT&T broadband customers free access and AT&T promised that it would "soon extend the benefits of Wi-Fi at Starbucks to its wireless customers", but no official announcement has yet been made

I count stuff
Continuing in the vein this week/month of reducing information clutter - and adding to my hardware clutter - more later - I decided to go one step further and try to make my Google Reader more effective. I had subscribed (if that is the verb) to so much that I could no longer bear to look... except as an insomnia cure, when quite frankly I will do anything!
Having this rather weird fixation with numbers - no not in a clever way, I wish it was - rather I just find myself counting, and I have often counted into the hundreds before I notice. (It is often the case that on dog walks I count the number of steps I take, and only when I get home do I realise what I was doing... I know, seek help :))
Any road, I also use my counting fixation to manage stuff, make decisions, picking a random number, and pontificating using many and varied (usually barking) tools of measurement stopping at that number and plumping with the associated choice. Er, this might make me seem rather slapdash to future employers, sorry - I try to keep this to the trivial, say Mac or PC? - or some such demotive argument. *Emma grins wickedly at all Mac bullies*
Even with more money, how is it that Microsoft doesn't outinnovate Apple?
Microsoft spent $7.4 billion last year on research and development. Apple spent $844 million. Yet Apple seems to deliver far more innovative products to market.
This comparison may have you scratching your head (Where can all that money go?) but as Ben Worthen notes at the WSJ's Tech Biz blog, there doesn't seem to be much correlation between R&D spending and innovation.
After Microsoft came IBM ($6.2 billion), Intel ($5.8 billion), Cisco ($4.7 billion), and H-P ($3.6 billion). Oracle ($2.5 billion), SAP ($2.3 billion), Google ($2.1 billion), Sun ($1.9 billion), and AMD ($1.8 billion) rounded out the top 10.Google's total was $890 million, or 74%, more than it spent on R&D last year, according to CIO Zone, making it the biggest mover in terms of dollars spent.
So Google spent 80 percent less on R&D than H-P? Weird.
Foxconn to assemble the "upcoming" 3g iPhones.
According to digitimes, Foxconn, the manufacturer of the first generation of iPhones is reported to be making around 24-25 million units of the 3g iPhone, which also according to digitimes, will be out around June, or around Apple's World Wide Developers Conference this year.
My only problem is the FCC passing it, when it hasn't been confirmed yet to the general public. Meaning we will probably see the 3g iPhone in late 08' or early 09'
