Add Wifi to the friendly skies

The long wait to finally be able to Facebook while flying from LA to NY has now arrived.  Delta announced that it will be offering wifi on some of its aircraft.  The service will be offered on its fleet of MD88 and MD90's and then roll out the service to their other aircraft in time.

The service will be provided by Aircell's Gogo.  Gogo has said that the service provides a hotspot in the aircrafts cabin allowing connectivity for computers, smart phones and PDA's.  However on all U.S. flights, phone use is still probhibited and Gogo is not allowing use of Skype or other voip technology to be used.  Gogo has stated that their 2 megabit per second connectivity appears that it is 15 megabit per second with their caching technology.

As with a lot of services that once used to be free on flights, this service has a fee.  For flights that are less than 3 hours long, the service will cost $9.95 and $12.95 for flights lasting longer than 3 hours.  Finally, Delta may have a service where passengers aren't complainging about the additional fee.
